Counting the Days

As many of you know, I am a proud member of the Canadian Celiac Association (CCA) http://www.celiac.ca
I am very excited about going to the annual conference in Ottawa this month and I am counting the days.
I will be arriving in Ottawa on the 12th of May, so that I don’t miss one second of the conference.
Here are the details:

Ottawa is proud to be hosting the 30th annual Canadian Celiac Association National Conference, taking place May 13-15, 2011 at what will be the recently opened, brand spanking new Convention Centre in the heart of downtown Ottawa. Please come and join us!

The exciting spectacle will take place within convenient walking distance of numerous hotels, the famous Byward Market, fine celiac dining options, the University of Ottawa, the magnificent Rideau Centre and, of course, Parliament Hill. From the Tulip Festival to Gatineau Park and from NHL hockey to the Arboretum, Ottawa has something for everyone.

The Conference will feature a roster of expert speakers drawn from across North America. Among them are:

KEYNOTE: Dr. Daniel Leffler, Harvard University, co-author of Real Life with Celiac Disease.
Dr. Peter Green, Columbia University, co-author of Celiac Disease: a Hidden Epidemic.
Dr. Jon Meddings, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary.
Dr. Ted Malahias, Dentist, and frequent speaker on dental abnormalities in celiac disease.
HOTEL OPTIONS: Please click here for details about the wide variety of accommodation options for the Conference, including the Westin, connected to the Convention Centre, where we have negotiated a good price of $179.

If you’re planning to stay with relatives or at a spot in another part of town, you need not worry about transport and parking downtown. The area around the Convention Centre is the hub of Ottawa’s public transit, OC Transpo, and nearly all major bus routes cross it, including one route that runs 24 hours a day. For those arriving at the Ottawa airport or train station, both are only one frequently-running city bus away from the Convention Centre.

REGISTRATIONS: To register, please download the form here. INFORMATION: For more information, please contact Northeastern Ontario regional director June Williams at june-williams@sympatico.ca.
Hope to see you there!

A Celiac Disease and Gluten Sensitivity Update

Sunday April 18, 2010
2:00-4:00pm

Celiac Disease is the most underdiagnosed disease in North America today, with an incredibly low 3% diagnosis rate. This has led to the metaphor that diagnosed celiacs represent only the visible tip of a much larger undiagnosed “iceberg”. In fact, the average length of time it takes for a symptomatic person to be diagnosed with celiac disease in North America is 11 years, compared to only 3 weeks in Italy! Some of the more common diagnoses patients receive before obtaining the correct celiac assessment include irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, anemia, anxiety, and depression.

Join Crystal Di Domizio, holistic nutritionist and featured speaker Dr. Arjuna Veeravagu, naturopathic physician, for a journey into the world of celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

At this month’s meeting we will review the history of celiac disease and gluten sensitivity, current celiac screening and diagnosis, new lab tests to screen for non-celiac gluten sensitivity and the many signs, symptoms and illnesses potentially triggered by gluten ingestion.

 Featured Speaker:

Dr. Arjuna Veeravagu is a naturopathic physician, registered acupuncturist and founder of Sage Clinic in Yaletown. He has studied the work of several CD and gluten sensitivity experts, including Kenneth Fine MD and James Braly MD. Dr. Veeravagu offers the new screening tests for gluten sensitivity in his practice at Sage Clinic. More information about Dr. Veeravagu and Sage Clinic can be found at www.sageclinic.com.
